Our action for "People and Mountains of the Mékong - Laos

On 21 and 22 June 2023, La Belle Expé had the pleasure of meeting the French association Peuples et Montagnes du Mékong in Muang Xai, Laos.

This association (authorized by the Lao government) is an international solidarity association, recognized for the general interest. It was created in June 2011 by people who want to help people and ethnic groups living on the banks of the Mekong and in the surrounding mountains of northern Laos.

We had the opportunity to meet Justine, a volunteer in Civic Service engaged in Education and Health missions. Thanks to your generous donations, we were able to purchase 43 euros worth of pharmaceutical equipment to support the needs of dispensaries in the region.

The objectives of "Mekong Peoples and Mountains" (MEWP) are as follows:

1. Prioritize medium- and long-term training measures as the key to sustainable development.

2. Consider the working environment of healthcare professionals by participating in the implementation of water supply projects to ensure a healthy work environment for them.

3. Carry out their mission in close proximity to the population, particularly by providing local support to healthcare workers in health clinics and district hospitals.

In practical terms, the PEMM association offers the following initiatives:

- Training programs for doctors, midwives, nurses, and health volunteers in Laos.

- Support and guidance for Laotian dispensaries to enhance health practices, implement hygiene campaigns, and improve the organization of dispensaries.

- Organization of hygiene campaigns in villages.

- Collaborative supervision, in partnership with donor organizations, for water supply projects, installation of photovoltaic cells, and the construction of new dispensaries.

- Partnership and support for the Luang Prabang Centre for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

- Involvement in autism centers in Vientiane.

- Organization of solidarity trips for groups.

PEMM is actively seeking other medical volunteers, donations, sponsors, members, and patrons to support their noble cause.

The Lao People’s Democratic Republic is 70% made up of mountains and plateaus. Laos has a population of about 7,200,000, 60% of whom still live in rural or mountainous areas.

Laos has up to 68 different ethnic groups. Due to its history, geographical particularities and the variety of its ethnic groups, it remains one of the poorest countries in Southeast Asia.
